About

Chatham University is a private, nonsectarian university founded in 1869 and was named after the namesake of Pittsburgh, William Pitt, the First Earl of Chatham. Chatham is large enough to deliver strong academic programs and exceptional experiential learning opportunities yet small enough to retain a personal touch in student services. The average student to faculty ratio is 10:1 at the undergraduate level, and courses are taught by faculty who hold terminal degrees (88%). Chatham students learn concepts in the classroom and apply those skills while participating in internships, service projects or research. Chatham University is an exceptional learning environment with a large selection of classes in over 40 degree programs. The beautiful campus is conveniently located near the best of western Pennsylvania attractions. Chatham’s active student life provides opportunities to interact with other university students. The Offices of International Affairs and Student Services will help you adjust quickly and support you throughout the semester. Pittsburgh, which is frequently voted one of the most livable cities in the United States, is a center for education, business, medicine, and culture. With a population of about 2.5 million residents, Pittsburgh has a dynamic city life with museums, theatres, professional sports teams, dinning, and shopping. As the 22nd largest metro area in the United States, it is a big city with small town safety, charm, and hospitality. With over 7000 international students studying at area universities, Pittsburgh is diverse and cosmopolitan. Chatham is a short ride from the Pittsburgh International Airport, which has easy connections to other major U.S. cities and international destinations. All Chatham students receive bus passes that permit easy access to the amenities of the city. Bicycles can also be rented from Chatham’s bike shop. Many of Chatham’s campus buildings (including residence halls) are historic mansions in the upscale Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Shadyside and Squirrel Hill. These neighborhoods have the warmth of small American towns and are located just minutes from the arts and commerce of Pittsburgh.
