About

Aberystwyth was founded in 1872 as the first university institution in Wales. With a long tradition of academic excellence, it now has more than 9,000 students studying in a stunning campus location overlooking Cardigan Bay. A number of renowned research facilities are located in the town, including the National Library of Wales. It has the largest and busiest arts centre in mid-Wales and a lively social scene. According to The Times Good University Guide 2011, Aberystwyth offers the best all-round student experience in the country and is fourth in the UK for Teaching and Learning. In the recent International Student Barometer (published April 2010), Aberystwyth was ranked first out of 123 higher education institutions worldwide for the elements ‘good place to be’ and ‘overall student satisfaction’. Aberystwyth provides a warm and friendly welcome to approximately 1,000 international students from more than 110 countries around the world. Aberystwyth is a research-focused university with a long and distinguished record of undertaking leading edge research of national and international significance, and an established worldwide reputation for research excellence. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) identified world leading research in 15 of 16 subject areas. 48% of research activity rated as world leading or internationally excellent and 97.4% of researchers work in disciplines where world leading research is undertaken. Academic strengths: The three main faculties – the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Social Studies – are sub-divided into various departments. Aberystwyth is particularly strong in theatre, film and television studies; biological sciences; geography and earth sciences; law and criminology; history and Welsh history; management and business studies; Celtic studies; and computer science. The Department of International Politics – the first department of its kind in the world, founded in 1919 – received top ratings in the 2008 RAE and has one of the largest graduate schools for international relations in the world, with more than 150 master’s and PhD students. Facilities: The University’s main library seats more than 1,700 students and houses more than one million titles. The National Library of Wales is situated next to the campus and is one of five copyright libraries in the UK, meaning it receives a copy of every book published in the country. It holds more than six million books, periodicals, magazines and maps. The University has more than 1,000 PCs available to students and most can be used on a 24-hour open-access basis for word processing, databases and design. All students have free access to the high speed university computer network. We provide a range of excellent facilities, including galleries and studios, scientific laboratories, theatres, television studios and sports testing laboratories. The language laboratory helps students learn languages such as English, German, Spanish and Welsh. We also have a state of-the-art £10.4m Centre for Visualisation, which has some of the finest virtual reality facilities in the UK. Childcare facilities are available, including school and holiday clubs along with a fully licensed pre-school nursery. There are brand new buildings on campus that house the Departments of Sport and Exercise Science; Theatre, Film and Television Studies (which includes radio and television studios); and International Politics.
