At EHS, education is conducted in human rights and democracy, as well as in theology / religious studies. EHS became a pioneer by being the first university in the country in 1997 to offer an interdisciplinary education program in human rights.
The university has a bachelor's, master's and master's degree in human rights, as well as a bachelor's, master's and master's degree in theology, licentiate and doctoral degrees in theology / religious studies.
600-700 study annually at EHS and the university currently has about 30 senior lecturers employed, half of whom are associate professors or professors.
EHS offers higher education and research of the highest scientific quality. The university receives government grants and the courses are eligible for study grants. EHS has externally funded research projects and also conducts commissioned activities of various kinds.
Through extensive international contacts and close collaboration with several Swedish and Nordic universities, EHS offers opportunities for both students and teachers for exchange and joint research projects.
EHS was founded in 1993 after merging two institutions with both started in 1866, namely the Theological Seminary on Lidingö and the pastoral education at the Bethel Seminary in Bromma. In 2016, EHS was thus able to look back on a 150-year-long educational tradition, and in its current organizational form, it celebrated its 25th anniversary in the 2018/2019 academic year.
In 2008, the Methodist Church in Sweden also became a partner in the university. A few years later, the three denominations formed the new denomination that is today called the Equmenia Church. In addition to the educational program for future pastors in the Equmenia Church, there are many future priests in the Church of Sweden who study their academic education at EHS, as well as future priests and parish educators in the Orthodox churches.
The university is a member of the Stockholm Academic Forum , a collaborative organization between 18 universities and colleges and the city of Stockholm, as well as the Swedish Association of Universities and University Colleges (SUHF), an association where 38 universities and colleges are members on a voluntary basis.
The Stockholm University of Theology (THS) is now the common name for our two theological departments, and the University of Human Rights and Democracy (HMR) is the name for our various programs in human rights and democracy.
