About Halifax Language Institute of Canada Halifax Language Institute of Canada is a dynamic English school located on the east coast of Canada, in the capital of the province of Nova Scotia. We cater to a variety of studentsâ program needs, and also offer customized English programs for employee groups. Mission Statement At Halifax Language Institute of Canada, our mission is to provide students with unique communication programs that will improve their English language proficiency, confidence, and accuracy. We strive to provide all of our students with the skills necessary to succeed in a personal, academic and/or professional capacity. Halifax ESL Programs Offered: General English, Integrated Skills This program has been designed for students who do not wish to continue their post-secondary education at an English speaking institution, and want to focus more on communication and conversation skills. Students will attend classes for 25 hours per week. The morning class will consist of lessons in integrated skills while the afternoon class will focus on developing vocabulary, register, and speaking skills for communicating about a wide range of topics. Each week a different theme will be presented in the afternoon class, allowing students to gain confidence speaking and conversing about numerous topics. General Business English Our Business English program is for students who have at least a low intermediate level of English and who wish to learn English in a business context. Students receive 25 hours of classroom instruction per week. Students will study a general English program of integrated skills in the morning class, and will focus on different aspects of business in the afternoon class. The following are examples of selected modules included in our General Business Program. Human Resources Socialization and Networking Banking and Finance Marketing, Sales and Advertising Business Communications Negotiations and Business Contracts English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Our EAP program is for students who wish to continue with post-secondary education in English. The program consists of six levels, from beginner to advance. Each level is covered in an eight-week semester, and students have 25 contact hours with a teacher each week. Students will study integrated skills in the morning class, and will focus more on one of the skills than others in the afternoon class for levels 1 to 4. In Level 5, the focus in the afternoon class will be on test preparation, and learning strategies for both learning and test taking. The Level 6 afternoon class will consist of academic preparation. Bridging Programs, College, and University UNIVERSITY & COLLEGE BRIDGING PROGRAMS: Pathways Our Bridging program is designed for students who wish to continue with post-secondary education. The program consists of six levels, from beginner to advance. Each level is covered in an eight-week semester. Students will study integrated skills in the morning class, and will focus more on one of the skills than others in the afternoon class for levels 1 to 4. In Level 5, the focus in the afternoon class will be on test preparation, and learning strategies for both learning and test taking. The Level 6 afternoon class will consist of academic preparation. English for Specific Purposes Halifax Language Institute of Canada offers a number of programs specifically designed for a particular profession. Classes can operate for two, three or four weeks, and students will receive 25 hours per week of instruction. This will include classroom time, tours and visits to related businesses. Programs include: English for Engineers English for Medical Professionals English for the Hospitality Industry English for Travel and Tourism English for Banking and Finance TESTING PROGRAMS: IELTS/TOEFL/GMAT/CELPIP/CAEL/GMAT Preparation Programs - 4 weeks, 100-Hour Program The learning objective of the Test Preparation Program is to achieve communication that Includes; Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Interactions. Students will learn practice communication skills for the IELTS context. They will learn and practice basic social communications skills applicable to personal and professional situations, demonstrating competence, ethics, and interpersonal skills. Students will also develop reading strategies that will improve speed, comprehension, and retention. These programs focus on: ⢠Test taking strategies ⢠Academic vocabulary ⢠Writing styles ⢠English Proficiency ⢠Practice tests English for the CELPIP Test ⢠orientation to the test -what to expect on the test ⢠learning strategies for all four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking ⢠practice activities similar to actual test questions English for Immigration Preparation for the CELPIP test (NOC C and D) English for Skilled Workers (NOC 0, A and B) English for Skilled Workers ⢠based on skills required to meet CLB 5 ⢠learning strategies to improve reading, writing, listening, speaking and vocabulary ⢠practice activities to meet competencies Summer and Winter Camp Programs These courses are for groups of students who wish to travel, learn about Canada and study English at the same time. A different theme will be covered each week, with accompanying tours and excursions. Programs can be customized to include evening and weekend social events, trips, and excursions, and these extra activities can be customized if the students have a common interest, such as photography, hiking or others. Our campus is on Spring Garden Road, one of the most-travelled areas as well as a major commercial and cultural district in Halifax.
