Overview A Research University on a Human Scale The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is a top-100 national research institution and the state's flagship public university. Students from nearly all 50 states and 85 countries team with UNH's faculty on some of the world's most ambitious and adventurous research and intellectual efforts. Recent work on projects for NASA space missions, new ways to assess and prevent sports-related head injuries, development of anti-bullying programs and a breakthrough in the quest to solve one of the world's oldest mathematical problems all have garnered national attention for UNH scholars who are equally dedicated to research and teaching. It is no surprise then that a recent Gallup report found UNH graduates are 60% more likely than peers from other colleges and universities to be thriving in all five elements of well being: financial, physical, community, purpose and social. When it comes to choosing a course of study, students will find many options among more than 100 majors in the liberal arts, engineering and physical sciences, health and human services, life sciences and agriculture, and business and economics, as well as two-year associate degree programs in applied sciences, and programs at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester, a non-residential, urban campus. UNH students participate in more than 570 programs for study or research abroad, often supported by generous grants. More than 1,300 students participate in the annual Undergraduate Research Conference on campus. The Office of Fellowships helps students secure prestigious national and international fellowships. Located at the Edge of Possible UNH is situated close to the Atlantic coast and important marine research facilities, and an hour from the White Mountains or Boston. Durham is a quintessential college town with restaurants, coffeehouses, a bookstore, pizza shops and other student hangouts. The lively arts and culture scene of Portsmouth is about 20 minutes away. While all students may have a car, there is an Amtrak stop on campus (Downeaster Line) with service between Portland, Maine, and Boston; UNH Wildcat Transit eco-buses run frequently on campus and to nearby towns and shopping areas. Industry partnerships, outreach programs and UNH's proximity to Boston, Manchester and Portsmouth provide abundant possibilities for student internships. A Community Where Relationships Matter Right from the start, new students feel welcome at UNH. Ninety-one percent of all first-year students and approximately half of UNH's 12,800 undergraduates live on the beautiful Durham campus where classic and modern buildings cluster around college greens that gradually give way to acres of woods, fields and farms. University housing includes residence halls and on-campus apartments. Professional directors and trained resident advisors manage each hall at UNH, organizing programming designed to foster community and healthy habits. UNH's award-winning culinary experience is evident in its three spacious dining halls, where menus focus on healthy options using fresh local products and can be tailored to suit nutritional needs. Other campus food service includes cafés and retail sites. Amtrak rail service runs out of The Dairy Bar, a UNH restaurant housed in an historic depot. The University of New Hampshire's rich social and cultural environment offers more than 250 student clubs and organizations sponsoring a wide range of activities and lectures, films, exhibitions, master classes and performances that bring visitors of national and international stature to campus. Most events are free for students. Campus Recreation organizes a broad slate of programs for all skill levels and ability, allowing students to work on personal fitness goals and have fun through activities on or near campus as well as skiing, snowboarding, hiking and camping trips in the White Mountains. More than 20 intramural and club sports for men, women and co-ed teams reflect the community's diverse interests. The Hamel Student Recreation Center is undergoing a $30 million expansion to double the fitness space and add wellness classrooms, a kitchen and an outdoor pool. UNH also has 20 different men's and women's Division I Wildcat sports teams, including Division I-FCS football. Athletic events are well attended and the spirited student-led Cat Pack rouses fans.
